Assignment Description
Deadline and Prerequisites
There is no strict deadline, but the data science colloquium should be completed before presenting the final Master thesis project. Therefore after completing part 1 and before continuing to part 2 of the thesis project is an ideal deadline. Also, it is highly advisable to have completed most of the thesis proposal (part 1), but is not necessarily a requirement.
Content
The colloquium consists of a 30-minute presentation in the form of a tutorial on the general field of the topic of the student’s thesis.
The presentation is aimed at introducing the audience to the thesis research area (what it is, why it is interesting, why it is challenging, etcetera), and present the related works that have been done in it.
Note that the related works presented in the colloquium do not require any additional research study since they are typically those included in thesis. Thesis proposal, but additional works may be included if deemed necessary.
The presentation should highlight not only what has been done in the field, but the challenges of these works, as well as the open challenges that remain.
It is important to note that the colloquium is about the research area of the thesis, and not about the specific research problem that the thesis will be about.
Each student is also required to listen and provide an evaluation to at least 3 colloquia. In other words, you will have to review anonymously the presentations of three other students.
Instructions:
- How to start: Share your pre-recorded 30-minute presentation and all the source material used to produce the talk with Angelos Chatzimparmpas at [a.chatzimparmpas@uu.nl]. You can use any method to share the files, but make sure to give Angelos access to them. Utrecht University advises you to use Microsoft OneDrive for this purpose. Note that to upload the presentation on the DASCpedia website, it should be max 64 MB in size!
- Presentation details: Screen sharing and audio are mandatory for the tutorial to ensure effective communication and engagement. Recording yourself (i.e., with a camera) during the session is optional. Your presentation can include an overview of relevant works and details for the most relevant research papers to your thesis topic. It may also feature a live demonstration of concepts to enrich understanding. Feel free to be creative in how you present and explain your ideas.
- Permissions: Explicitly state in the email that you grant permission for us to use your presentation and materials within Utrecht University. This includes sharing knowledge within the university community and with visitors/evaluators of the Data Science Master’s program. Optionally, you may choose to provide permission for your presentation to be shared publicly outside Utrecht University for educational purposes.
- Reviewing/Evaluation: From the list of continuously published presentations, choose at least three that you would like to review and inform Angelos of your selection via a follow-up email (using the same email thread where you shared your presentation). Be sure to include the unique ID and title of each presentation you select.
- Reviewing account: You will then receive an email invitation from Angelos to create an account on EasyChair (https://easychair.org/) and to review anonymously the talks you have selected. Just follow the instructions in the email to set up your account.
- The process in a nutshell: Watch the assigned presentations via MS Teams (“Presentations” channel) and evaluate the assigned presentations on EasyChair (“Review” field that allows for free text). Once your reviews are complete, submit them through EasyChair, selecting appropriate values for the “Overall evaluation” and “Reviewer’s confidence” fields. You don’t need to overthink these fields; just choose values based on your impression of the presentation and the relevance of the topic to you.
