Assignment Description
Deadline and Course Form
There is no strict deadline, but the Data Science Colloquium (DASC) should be completed before presenting the final Master’s thesis project.
- Individual research presentation and mandatory attendance in guest lectures.
- Students may deliver their individual research presentation at any time during the academic year (Study Periods 1–4).
- Finally, the Data Science Colloquium includes a series of seminars (guest lectures) organized throughout the academic year. The frequency is lower in Study Periods 1–3 (approximately one seminar per month) and increases in Study Period 4 (April–June), during which seminars are typically held on a weekly basis.
Content
The colloquium consists of a 30-minute presentation in the form of a tutorial on the general field of the topic of the student’s thesis.
The presentation is aimed at introducing the audience to the thesis research area (what it is, why it is interesting, why it is challenging, etcetera) and at presenting the related works that have been done in it.
Note that the related works presented in the colloquium do not require any additional research study since they are typically those included in the thesis proposal, but additional works may be included if deemed necessary.
The presentation should highlight not only what has been done in the field, but also the challenges of these works, as well as the open challenges that remain.
It is important to note that the colloquium is about the research area of the thesis, and not about the specific research problem that the thesis will address.
Lastly, the colloquium includes an Invited Speakers series throughout the academic year, which students are required to attend.
Instructions

- Presentation details: Screen sharing and audio are mandatory for the tutorial to ensure effective communication and engagement. Recording yourself (i.e., with a camera) during the session is optional. Your presentation can include an overview of relevant works and details for the most relevant research papers to your thesis topic. It may also feature a live demonstration of concepts to enrich understanding. Feel free to be creative in how you present and explain your ideas.
- Permissions: Explicitly state in the email that you grant permission for us to use your presentation and materials within Utrecht University. This includes sharing knowledge within the university community and with visitors/evaluators of the Data Science Master’s program. Optionally, you may choose to provide permission for your presentation to be shared publicly outside Utrecht University for educational purposes.
